The Houseplant Care Element Set and Application Profile
Requirements
This assignment entailed the full process of developing a metadata application profile surrounding an application domain focused around a collection of digital materials. Requirements for this project included developing a description of the domain, a domain analysis, a specification of my proposed element set, at least one local vocabulary specification, an encoding schema for the application profile in XSD format, one example XML record for a sample resource, and a brief essay to summarize the issues and challenges that I encountered in the process of developing this application profile.
Description
In my final project for INSC 524, I created a Metadata Application Profile for a Houseplant Care and Management Database. In this metadata application profile, I completed a domain description where I describe the need for a houseplant care and management database with accurate and consistent care data for indoor plants and a created an element set following best practices by using specifications from Dublin Core and Darwin Core and controlled vocabulary using the Getty Vocabularies and NCBI Taxonomy Database. Following the development of my specification set, I wrote an encoding schema in XSD format using Oxygen XML editor, including a sample XML record of a database entry and a Dublin Core Crosswalk. For this project, I analyzed and observed the need for this potential database in the houseplant community, following best practices for schema development throughout the planning process and in the development of the application profile.
The skills and competencies illustrated by this project demonstrate my experience with XML, XSD, and Metadata.
