Needle Workers’ Digital Library Proposal

Requirements

This project was completed collaboratively in a group of four. We worked together to identify a Digital Library that we would like to build and (1) identify the target community or communities and design and perform a community analysis; (2) develop collection guidelines; (3) create recommendations for metadata; (4) making decisions about technological infrastructure including digitization options; and (5) implementing a prototype DL that includes a small selection of a sample of 30-50 digital objects. Each team member was also responsible for writing a brief essay on our thoughts about what we learned from this project. The deliverable for the final report included:

  • Community Analysis Report
  • Collection Development Guidelines
  • Metadata Guidelines
  • Technology Infrastructure Report
  • A “beta version”/prototype of your DL

Description

The purpose of the Needle Worker’s Digital Library is to acquire and make accessible a swathe of materials regarding historical clothing construction methods. This digital library hopes to centralize this information for hobbyists, students, and professionals for the sake of conducting research on these methods. Our ultimate goal is to create and provide a resource that eliminates the issues of individual lack of resources and access to these kinds of materials, which often cost the user or are physically inaccessible due to distance, location of materials, or condition of materials.

The skills and competencies illustrated by this project demonstrate my ability to work collaboratively and develop guidelines and policies for digital collections and libraries.
