The Problem
This was an individual assignment for my Web Design class. The goal was to look at a website and compare it against Nielsen’s Usability Heuristics, and I chose the OVO app. I defined the user of the website and tried to put myself in that mindset.
What I did
This project and my OVO redesign were done years apart, but I l wanted to use this app for this assignment because I knew it had problems, and I was interested in fixing them already. To begin, I went through the app and wrote down notes for what I thought was a problem. I then went back through the problems and compared them to the heuristics to see which one(s) they violated. Then I rated its severity using Nielsen’s rating system. After rating the problems, I went through and figured out how I wanted to fix each problem.
The Results
I found that most of the problems were not very severe according to the scale, besides one. The navigation of the app was very confusing because the back button would sometimes takes you to a different page than you were previously on. With an app like OVO Store where a few seconds can mean the difference between getting an item and not getting it, this was a huge problem. Some of the minor problems included error checking for addresses and telling the user how to fix their problems.
