KATIE

Katie Gavin (she/they) was born on December 30, 1992 in Chicago, Illinois and resides in Los Angeles, California.

At age 13, Gavin began writing original songs and learning how how to play the guitar. Two years later, she was accepted in The Grammy Foundation’s Grammy Camp summer program at the USC Thornton School of Music, which focuses on teaching high school students audio engineering, songwriting, vocal performance, music journalism, and electronic music production.

In December 2010, she posted a YouTube video covering Willow Smith’s song Whip My Hair and it went viral with 200,000 views in less than a month.

MCPHERSON

NAOMI

Naomi McPherson (they/them) was born on January 6, 1993 in California, and resides in Los Angeles, California.

McPherson grew up in a family of jazz musicians and spent a large amount of their teenage years resisting the urge to become a full-time professional musician.

They were double-majoring in Narrative Studies and American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California when they met Gavin and Maskin and ultimately began to form MUNA throughout 2013.

Much of McPherson’s musical inspiration derives from the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization, which highlights the LA punk-rock scene of the 1970s.

MASKIN

JOSETTE

Josette Maskin (she/they) was born on February 26, 1994 in Los Angeles, California where she currently resides.

Maskin spent much of her youth performing in a series of short-lived bands before she met Gavin at the University of Southern California. Before MUNA came to fruition, her and Gavin formed a group called Cuddleslut, but no music was ever released and they only performed one live show. In 2013, the duo collaborated with McPherson during college and eventually created MUNA.

Maskin graduated the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in Music.
