Resume Tips

One of the MLIS Application Requirements is a resume. MLIS programs want to see how you present yourself as a professional, not if you’re already qualified! Be sure to list your bachelor’s degree followed by any relevant work experience. Also, customer service experience looks excellent, as you will likely deal with the public to some extent. Also, be sure to list any relevant volunteer experience and skills (showing that you can learn new technology is critical).

MLIS Application Requirements

Although the application requirements for every MLIS program are different, here are some general rules that you will find:

  • GPA Requirement – MLIS programs recommend a mimimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 to 3.25. If your GPA is a little lower, don’t fret! Some programs may overlook a lower GPA in lieu of extracurricular activities, stellar letters of recommendation, or related experience.
  • GRE Scores – Increasingly, GRE scores are not needed for admission into graduate programs. However, if you have a lower GPA, you may want to contact your school of choice to see if a good GRE score can improve your chances of admission.
  • Resume – Most MLIS programs require a resume with the application.
  • Letters of Recommendation – Most programs require three letters of recommendation. Previous supervisors and professors that you have worked closely with are excellent choices. If you have any experience in a library setting (even in a volunteer capacity), that supervisor’s recommendation could be instrumental in getting you into your program of choice.
  • Essay – A written statement in the form of an essay is commonly required. This written statement is usually 500 to 1000 words and is mainly used to see if you will be a good fit for the program. Please visit our Essay Help page for tips on writing this statement.
