Collaboration in an MLIS Program

An MLIS degree will constantly ask that you work in groups or with partners, reach out to professionals for assignments, or conduct research with outside individuals. This expectation mirrors the real-world collaboration that information scientists and librarians use every day in their work. It also creates the perfect opportunity to become more comfortable taking part in the community around you. Making connections with others is one of the pillars of an MLIS program.

What Should You Do Before Entering an MLIS Program?

Before you enter a program, you will need to apply and be accepted to it, which you can read about on our application requirements page. However, you may also be wondering about other, less explicit requirements, such as work experience or specific educational background. Well, you’re in luck! Most MLIS programs do not require any specific undergraduate degree and welcome students from all majors and programs of study. Additionally, there is no requirement for work experience either, though having that experience may help you make connections in your program. What is most important is that you come with an open mind and are willing to challenge what you know, interested in experiencing a wide range of topics, and prepared to work with others to expand your understanding.

How Can I Best Prepare for an MLIS Program?

Librarians and Information Scientists all look different, but they are all equally valid. As such, the educational channels you will go through are extremely diverse. If you have a career in mind, before entering your program you should familiarize yourself with its requirements and take note of the skills you most want to improve or acquire during your time with your MLIS. Additionally, these programs provide the perfect opportunity to network in preparation for your profession. Before entering your MLIS, make sure you are prepared to make the most of the people you will be put in contact with- both students and faculty members.
