In INSC 516, the final paper allowed me to explore the MSIS learning objectives 7 and 9. In INSC 516, we learned about geographic information systems and their application in various fields. For my final paper, I analyzed information related to the use of GIS for strategic planning in a higher education environment. I met learning outcome 9 by analyzing literature and practice that showed how GIS could be used for strategic planning. This would give higher education institutions an advantage in spatial data processing and decision-making. This can help users navigate the changing landscape of higher education recruitment, retainment, facilities management, and alumni and community relationships. Through this report, I examined how institutions currently utilize GIS concepts to enhance each of the previously mentioned areas of their planning process. I also discussed the importance of potentially having staff trained in the use of GIS for this purpose. This project allowed me to meet learning outcome 7 by exploring the changing information landscape, information needs, and information behavior for strategic planning in the higher education environment.
