Geographic Information, Hobbies, and the Library
GIS and Public Libraries
Project Parameters: Research possible uses of geographic information and their use in the world of GIS and Public Libraries and write at least a 4000 word paper along with a 15 minute presentation.
What I did: This was an individual assignment where I looked at how GIS technologies could be used in a public library setting. With that as a theme, the paper focused on how public libraries could use GIS to help the following hobbies:
- Bird Watching
- Fishing
- Geocaching
- Hiking
- Historical Gaming and Modeling
-
Model Railroading
Each hobby contains areas where public libraries could use GIS to support those hobbies. Part of the project included an example of how model railroaders could use GIS tools to develop a model railroad track plan and layout design.

Outcomes and Student Learning Objectives:
- Describe the basic functional and analytical capabilities of GIS in the area of the research.
- Show GIS opportunities in non-traditional areas.
- Describe and explain issues relating to the use of GIS in the public and private sectors.
