The film that started it all is without a doubt Frank Capra’s 1934 It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. It exhibits many of the tropes we’ve come to love and expect in modern Rom Coms – opposite personalities brought together under dishonest means.
Colbert plays Ellie Andrews a rich girl rebelling from her prescribed life by eloping with the rake King Westley. When her father locks her on their yacht to give him time to annul the marriage, she escapes and goes on the run with Clark Gable’s Peter Warne. Warne is a cynical newspaper reporter trying to get an exclusive on the paper-selling debutante. Of course, neither is prepared for the love that develops during their off-the-grid adventure.
It Happened One Night is required viewing for romantic comedy film fans of all ages!
