Romantic Comedy Film Genre Defined

Merriam Webster defines romantic comedy as “a light, comic movie or other work whose plot focuses on the development of a romantic relationship.”

Romantic Comedies, or Rom-Coms, are a popular genre of film for moviegoers of all ages and have been produced since at least the 1930s.  A typical Rom-Com film presents a storyline around a central romantic pairing whose journey to lasting love is complicated by situational or coincidental obstacles. The obstacles are often humorous and enlightening for the viewing audience.

Over the years many types of comedy films exist parallel to the traditional rom-com genre such as screwball comedies, sex comedies, or chick flicks.  Some moviegoers might label those films under the romantic comedy genre too.  Movie watching is a fun collective experience; categorizing films for easy recommendation is not meant to polarize or offend any visitors’ sensibilities or personal interpretation.  No film was deliberately excluded from this website.
