Trees

Over half of the land is dominated by either chestnut or red oak forests situated on the ridge tops and upper slopes. Additionally, mid-slope positions support areas of mixed hardwood forests that include maple, birch, ash, and basswood trees. Yellow poplar forests are on the lower slopes and along streams.

Animals

You can find some amazing animals in Shennandoah! These include spotted skunks, black bears, and bobcats. Additionally you can find rodents like shrews, moles, and voles. A highlight of camping includes seeing big brown bats at night. Nevertheless, deer and squirrels are more often observed by visitors, while others, such as bobcats, are more elusive.

Today, Shenandoah is a refuge for many animals. Furthermore, the Park is home to over 190 resident and transient bird species, over 50 mammal species. Finally, over 20 reptile and amphibian species, and over 40 fish species, live here. Visitors may see some of the thousands of other park residents, albeit with patience, skill, and some luck.
